When The Music's Over - Jim Morrison in Paris
James Douglas Morrison (n* 8 decembrie 1943, Florida – † 3 iulie 1971, Paris) a fost un cantaret, compozitor si textier american, solistul vocal si liderul formatiei rock psihedelice The Doors. A studiat cinematografia la UCLA.
[modificare] ViataCand era copil familia petrecea foarte multa vreme pe drumuri datorita carierei tatalui sau, ofiter in Marina Militara. La sfasitul anilor 50 Morrison s-a stabilit in Alexandria, Virginia unde si-a incheiat si liceul. In 1964 s-a mutat pe coasta de vest, iar in 1966 a intrat la Universitatea Californiei din Los Angeles.
In anul 1965 l-a intalnit pe Ray Manzarek si impreuna ei au format renumitul grup rock The Doors. Denumirea grupului provine de la un vers celebru al lui William Blake, " If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite" (Daca usile perceptiei ar fi deschise totul i-ar aparea omului ca ceea ce este, infinit). Debutul discografic si-l fac 2 ani mai tarziu cu albumul omonim, The Doors, aparut in 1967 sub egida editurii Elektra Records.
In 1969, in urma unui chef mai lung, Morrison a aparut beat pe scena in fata a 13.000 spectatori in Coconut Grove, Florida.
As some of you may know, I'm a big fan of The Doors and their music. During my visit to Paris last year I decided to pay a visit to Pere Lachaise, the cemetery where Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors, is buried. I had no idea what it would be like but when I got there I knew I was in for something very special.
Located on the Metro 3 or Gallieni line, Pere Lachaise covers about 118 acres. It's been there since the early 1800's and over 300,000 people are buried there. It's the kind of place that reminds you life is short and one day the music will end.
So why is Jim buried there? Jim was taking a break with his girlfriend, Pamela Courson, after completing the album L.A. Woman just a few months before. During my research, I came across some pictures which were taken a week before he died and also some other pictures taken during the recording of L.A. Woman. Jim died suddenly and under mysterious circumstances but that's what makes the story so fascinating. After all, like Jim said, people are strange.
Originally I was going to do my own voiceover, which I still may do. But during my research I came across a spoken word album by the keyboard player with The Doors, Ray Manzarek, which summed up perfectly the whole Jim Morrison Paris situation. Ray tells the story like it happened yesterday and I'm sure you'll agree it fits in nicely with the vision I shot and also the pictures that start the film.
If you do ever get to Paris, be sure to pay a visit to Pere Lachaise and all it has to offer. It may be a cemetery but it's a wonderful place to just chill out and see a part of Paris that has literally been frozen in time.
Enjoy the journey and remember when the music's over, turn out the light.
Peace and love,
